What is James Dooley's role at Soft Surfaces?

James Dooley joined Soft Surfaces in 2006 as a project manager. The company had no marketing team at all, so he taught himself search engine optimisation to win contracts. Within 12 months he was Marketing Director. He became a director of the company on 1 July 2011, and he is now its Chief Marketing Officer and a co-owner.

David Snell founded Soft Surfaces and remains a director. He and James Dooley are still close friends after the journey they have shared building the company.

How did SEO grow Soft Surfaces?

Before James Dooley started on search, Soft Surfaces relied on word of mouth. SEO has taken it from £1 million to £10 million a year in turnover, and it now generates more than 150 leads a day.

In September 2026 a school buyer uploaded four quotes for a 3G sports pitch to ChatGPT and asked which offered the best value. ChatGPT chose Soft Surfaces, the second most expensive bid, and the school awarded it the £572,000 contract. The full story is in the case studies.
